Community solar vs rooftop solar panels — what is the difference?
Rooftop solar puts panels on your own roof, which you buy, finance or lease. Community solar puts nothing on your property: you subscribe to part of a local solar farm and receive a discount on the portion of your bill that farm covers.

- Rooftop solar: needs a suitable roof you own, an installation, and usually a loan, lease or upfront payment.
- Community solar: no roof needed, no installation, no upfront cost, and you can cancel any time with no fee.
- Renters can join community solar as long as the electric bill is in their name.
- With both, you keep your utility connection.
We also arrange rooftop solar quotes for owners who want panels — see our solar panels page.
